Overview:
• Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano in the Gulf of Naples about 9 km east of Naples and a short distance from the beach.
• It is one of the many volcanoes that form the "Campanian volcanic arc", and "Vesuvius" consists of a large cone and a sharp edge.
• The mountain is famous for its eruption in 79 AD, which led to the burial and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and several other settlements.
• The explosion created a cloud of stones, ash and smoke at a height of 33 km, ejecting molten rock and pulverized pumice at a rate of 1.5 million tons per second.
• Because of the hydrothermal lava flows, about 16,000 people have died.
• "Vesuvius" has erupted several times since then, and this region is considered one of the most densely populated volcanic regions in the world.
