Nihonbashi

Overview:

Nihonbashi Bridge 日本橋 is a bridge located in the Nihonbashi District, a business district in Chuo District, Tokyo.

Historic overview:

The bridge connects the two banks of the Nihonbashi River since the seventeenth century, when the first wooden bridge was built in 1603 AD, while the current stone bridge was built in 1911 AD.

Nihonbashi's fame began in the early seventeenth century when it became the beginning of the Tokaido Road that connects Kyoto with Edo (present-day Tokyo), at that time it was known as Edo-bashi (Edo Bridge).

In the Meiji period, the wooden bridge was replaced by a stone bridge, which is still standing today.

The importance of Nihonbashi also lies in the fact that it is the ground zero for road mileage in Japan, with expressways showing distances to Tokyo measured in kilometers from Nihonbashi.
