Historic overview:
• The first fish market was established in Edo (present-day Tokyo) by Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Edo period to provide Edo Castle with the fish and marine products it needs. Surplus fish not bought by Edo Castle were sold to the general public at Nihonbashi, and a market developed in that area.
• After the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923 AD, Tokyo was reorganized and the market moved from Nihonbashi to its current area in Tsukiji after completing construction in 1935 AD.

• The market is divided into two main parts:
- The inner part (場内市場 Junai Shijo) and includes licensed wholesale shops, where auctions take place and most of the buying and selling of fish takes place, as the inner market includes about 900 commercial companies that own small shops in this section.
- As for the outer part (場外市場, Jogai Shijo), it includes a large number of shops with different activities, from retail shops to restaurants, the most famous of which is sushi restaurants.
