The former Hokkaido Government Office is a red brick building that was built in 1888 in the American neo-Baroque style, and it is an iconic symbol of Hokkaido.
It houses historical exhibitions, an exhibition shop, a tourist information office and a conference hall.

The building is designed similar to the Massachusetts State House in the United States
About 2.5 million bricks were used in its construction, and when completed it was one of the tallest and largest buildings in Japan at 33 metres.
