Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

Overview:

• It is one of the most famous landmarks of (Kurfürstendamm) Street, which is called (Kudamm).

• A symbol of peace and reconciliation, the Protestant memorial Kaiser Wilhelm Church also embodies the desire of Berliners to rebuild the city during the post-war period.

• This is clearly shown by the fact that the church is not only composed of the ruins of the church that was destroyed during the Second World War, but also contains contemporary church architecture, thus it is a vivid comparison between modernity and history.

Architectural description:

• The design represents a multi-tower building in the romantic style, and its 113-meter-high tower was the tallest in the city.

• The interior is also wonderful, decorated with beautiful mosaics and wall paintings.

• In November of the year 1943 AD, the Kaiser's Church was largely destroyed, but in the post-war years the remains of the church turned into a symbol of Berlin's rise from the rubble. The remaining 68-meter-high tower structure (also known as hohle Zahn, meaning hollow tooth) was turned into an anti-war memorial.

Historic overview:

• The new Roman church, which was founded to glorify the first Greek emperor in the period between 1891 AD and 1895 AD and was designed by "Franz Schwechten", was built on the orders of Kaiser "Wilhelm II" with the aim of establishing a religious monument in honor of his grandfather, "Wilhelm I".

• After the destruction of the church in an explosive raid in 1943 AD and in 1956 AD, there was a tendency to remove the remains of the church that stood as a witness to the atrocities of the war in order to make way for the construction of a new building, but the people of Berlin strongly protested against this matter and wanted to include the remains of the church with the new building.

• The modern building was constructed between 1959 AD and 1961 AD and was designed by " Egon Eiermann". Many scenes of the series "Memory of Paper" were filmed next to this historical landmark.
