Overview
• Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous landmarks in Paris.
• The Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile, originally is called Triumphal Arch of the Star. It is standing at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle.
• The Arc de Triomphe has an overall height of 50 meters and width of 45 m. From the inside, its walls had the names of the French leaders who fought in the wars written on.
Historic overview
• The Arc de Triomphe was built upon the commission of Napoleon I to honor the French army.
• The construction of the Arc de Triomphe began in 1806, but the construction work ceased after the fall of Napoleon in 1815.
• The construction was resumed in the 1830s upon the comission of King Louis Philippe. It was completed in 1836.
• Three architects participated in the project include Jean Chalgrin (1739–1811), Louis-Robert Goust (from 1811 to 1814), and Guillaume-Abel Blouet (from 1833 to 1836).
• Beneath the Arc is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I. it hosts the eternal flame that lit in memory of the dead who were never identified
