Historic overview
• The Champs-Elysées dates back to 1616 when Queen Marie de Medici decided to improve it and make it more vibrant by adding more trees and expanding it after it was originally a host of fields and gardens. Trees were planted on both sides of the road. The Champs-Elysées was decorated and expanded from the "Tuileries Garden" as far as the "Place d'Étoile", now known as "the Place Charles de Gaulle".
• By the late 18th century, the Champs-Elysées had been owned by the Paris municipality and became a vibrant place as it was lit up and after the opening of cafes, restaurants and hotels there.
