Bab Agnaou

Overview:

• "Bab Agnaou" is one of the doors that the Almohads supported the Kasbah of Marrakesh, some of which were destroyed and only this "Bab Agnaou" remains, which is still standing opposite the hermitage of the mosque. It is the main door of the Almohad Kasbah, which is unique in its exquisite shape and unique architecture.

• It bears an Amazigh name "Aknaou", which means "the dumb" in Arabic. It is known that Moroccans call the "Aknaou name" for African elements, whose words are not understood by Moroccans, so they say about them in Berber "Arissawal Staknawt" that means "he pronounces Gnawi incomprehensible words."

Historical Overview:

• Perhaps the "Bab Agnaou", despite being an internal door separating the Kasbah or the royal quarter from the rest of the city, is the masterpiece of the historical doors in Marrakesh, as it was established during the reign of the Almohad sultan "Abd al-Moumen bin Ali al-Kawmi".

The French architect “Charles Messo” oversaw its restoration in the early sixties of the 20th century, and it was sufficient for him to have the honor of printing his pictures on Moroccan securities during the Muhammadiyah railway era and by order of the country’s monarch at the time, King Mohammed V.
