Jemaa el-Fna

Historical overview:

• Jemaa El-Fna Square dates back to the era of the founding of the city of Marrakesh, as it was built during the era of the Almoravid state during the fifth century AH, i.e. approximately 1070-1071 AD, where the purpose of its construction was shopping, but its importance increased after the construction of the "Kutubiyya Mosque" nearly a century later. This square was the main point of shopping at the time.

• The kings used the square as a large courtyard to display their armies, and to see the preparations of their forces prior to the launch of the battles which seek to unite cities and countries and the wars of independence. Since that date, it has been one of the most important places of tourism in Marrakesh, and a symbol of the city that is proud of its vitality and attractiveness to Arab and foreign tourists.

• Some people trace the origin of the square’s name to Jemaa El-Fna, due to its proximity to the square of the Almoravid Al-Hajar Palace, whose ruins were discovered under the “Koutoubia Mosque.” The word “Al-Fna” can also refer to “the courtyard” meaning “destruction and vandalism.” This proposition is confirmed by a group of historical testimonies that gather all the presence of an abandoned mosque in the middle of this square, which has become world-famous.

• UNESCO included "Jemaa El-Fna Square" in the list of intangible human heritage in the year 2001 AD, in order to increase interest, protect, and make it a symbol of human culture.
