Palais Bahia
Overview:
• Bahia Palace is a prominent historical landmark in the heart of the red city, which has been pulsing with life for centuries, and is still as if it was built a few hours ago.
• “Al Bahia” Palace is one of the most important historical palaces in Marrakech, which was established by the Minister “Ahmed bin Musa bin Ahmed al-Smalali”, who was known as “Ba Ahmad” and “The Grand Vizier”.
Historical overview:
• The Minister built “Al Bahia Palace” so that it would be evidence of affection and love for his wife, Bahia.
• He brought for its construction the most skilled craftsmen from Marrakesh, Fez, Salé, Azemmour and Sefrou to work in the palace for a period of consecutive years. Yet, he was unable to do so, as he died before the completion of the work on the palace, which lasted for more than six consecutive years, and accordingly he built one of the most beautiful architectural masterpieces in all of Morocco.
• The construction of the palace was supervised by the Moroccan engineer "Mohammed bin al-Makki al-Massiawi", who received the arts of woodworking in Meknes and the art of engraving on gypsum in the city of Fez. Al-Mousawi took care of Ahmed's recommendation to build basins to build the palace and take care of the gardens in it.
Architectural Description:
• The palace includes many halls and suites, as well as annexes, parks, basins and gardens, which were built on a total area of 22,000 square meters.
• The most prominent suites of the palace are what is known as “The Little Riyadh”. It was built in the form of antique schools, where the corridors are topped with wooden friezes with various colors. Ahmed bin Musa took it as his headquarter in which he receives the senior men of the Kingdom. It consists of a courtyard built of marble and 4 basins surrounding a fountain. A group of halls opens to the courtyard with ceilings decorated with distinctive and unique decorations, in addition to another diwan on the eastern side of “The Little Riyadh”, consisting of a carved and decorated lobby with various decorations.
