Overview:
• The Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakesh is one of the oldest existing Moroccan mosques, as it was built in 1147 AD on the ruins of an old Almoravid palace.
• The name of Koutoubia Mosque is taken from the bookstore, as there was a large and famous market for selling books in the area of the mosque.
Architectural Description:
• It covers an area of 5,300 square meters, and consists of 17 wings, and 11 domes decorated with an inscription, which clearly shows the character of Andalusian architecture.
• The minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque is the only one with a length of 77 meters. Historically, this minaret, distinguished by its decorations, served as a pulpit for announcing important decisions to the people, especially major political decisions and basic firmans. Its courtyard was a forum for many historical events, and many agreements were held in it.
