Medersa al-Attarine

Overview:

The "Attarine" Madrasa is located in the old city of Fez, next to the Qarawiyyin Mosque.

It was built by Sultan "Abu Said bin Yaqoub bin Abdul Haq Al-Marini" in the year 723 AH / 1324 AD, and due to the splendor and beauty of its structure, it was known as the 'Great School'.

Historic overview:

According to the narration of the historian "Ibn Abi Dhra'"; The order was issued to establish the school at the beginning of Sha’ban 723 AH in front of the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque.

Prince "Al-Marini" arranged the jurists to teach science, accommodated students in the school, and appointed a number of job holders, including muezzins, imams, and servants. The study was stopped on Friday of every week so that students and teachers went to perform prayers in the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque.

Architectural Description:

The architectural planning of the Al-Attarine School is characterized by simplicity, and its center is an open courtyard, which is preceded from the south by the qibla iwan, and is flanked on both sides by two traditional old schools which have the rooms for the residence of the students.
