Taj Mahal

Overview:

Taj Mahal is an exquisitely made tomb with elegant architecture, one of the Seven Eternal Miracles of the World, and one of the most beautiful Islamic buildings in India in terms of magnificence, decoration and engineering design.

It overlooks the city of Agra, India, which was the capital of the Mughals at that time before the capital was moved from Agra to Delhi, which is the capital of India until this day.

It was built by the Muslim Indian Emperor Shah Jahan to house the remains of his third wife, Arjumand Banu Begum, known as (Mumtaz Mahal) and to commemorate her.

Historic overview:

The Mughal Emperor Jahan Shah ordered the construction of the complex in 1632 AD to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal, and the tomb is the cornerstone of the complex. The construction of the mausoleum was completed in 1643 AD.

The construction was carried out under the supervision of the Council of Architects under the leadership of the architect of the imperial court, Professor Ahmed Lahori.

Taj Mahal was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 AD for being the jewel of Islamic art in India.

Architectural description:

Taj Mahal includes a complex of buildings and monuments, the most important of which is the famous mausoleum, a mosque and a guesthouse. The area of the complex is 17 hectares (42 acres), and Taj Mahal is based on the Persian and Mughal architecture in its design.
