About the city

Rome

Rome is the capital of Italy and it extends on both banks of the Tiber River, the second longest river in Italy.

Rome was in the past the capital of the Roman Empire, which controlled large areas of Europe and the Mediterranean region and even after the collapse of the empire, Rome continued as a central city on the level of Catholic Christianity, and is the seat of the Pope and the State of the Vatican as well.

The city center was built on seven hills east of the Tiber, and on the other side of the river is the Vatican Hill, which today also belongs to Rome (except for the Vatican village itself). Around the overcrowded centre, great and formidable suburbs extend around the city, and among the surrounding suburbs are agricultural fields and vast open spaces, some of them several kilometers from the center of Rome.

The history of the city of Rome goes back to its founding in the middle of the eighth century BC by the Latin tribe.

• Rome has been, since its foundation, the center of a network of roads which are so vast that they say "all roads lead to Rome", and it is still the same till today, surrounding Rome "the Grande Raccordo Anulare", which has a diameter of 20 kilometers and around it the cities annexed to Rome and many commercial centers. Rome is connected to the Italian rail network.

• Rome has a Mediterranean climate, where it is mild in spring and autumn, summer is hot, winter is cold and snow can fall in December, January, February and March.

• Rome is one of the richest and largest cities in the world technically, historically and religiously. It is a major center for trade, printing, publishing and production. Rome still contains many ancient monuments and memorials, including (St. Peter's Church, Santa Maria Magura Church, and Basilica of Holy John) and others, in 1980, UNESCO declared the Historic Center of Rome a world archaeological site.

• The "Vatican State", which is located in the heart of Rome, is considered the smallest country in the world (less than half a square kilometer), and it is of course a religious and tourist attraction. The "Trifoli Fountain" is very famous, as it is believed that throwing a coin in it can achieve your wish.
