Damascene Sword Monument
Overview:
• The Damascene Sword Monument is one of the most famous monuments in Syria, and a symbol of the city of Damascus.
• Its construction was out of gratitude and a reminder of the skill of the Damascene craftsman in making military weapons.
• This monument was established in the "Umayyad Square" in Damascus in the early sixties, and its first design was supervised by the late Syrian artist "Abdul Qader Arnaout", as the previous design embodied a group of flags representing the countries participating in the Damascus International Fair.
• In 1998, a new design was completed by the artist "Ehsan Antabi", which was executed from colored glass and iron.
• The Damascene Sword Monument, with its unique design, is considered one of the most important symbols in Syria today, as it was used as a logo for both the Syrian Arab Television and the Damascus International Fair.
Architectural Description:
• The monument consists of two identical facades of stained glass within a huge sword-shaped concrete structure.
• The design embodies an abstract painting that combines a damask rose and fire in one design, through asymmetrical geometric cuts.
