Nubian Museum
Overview:
It is located next to the Fatimid cemeteries on a high hill in the city of Aswan, and in it the Nubian monuments merge with the Egyptian monuments, and some of the different eras that passed over Aswan, as the museum forms a window to the world on a long history that some researchers see it complicated.
The museum includes the result of excavations in the Nubian areas that were threatened after the construction of the High Dam, reviewing the history of Nubia from prehistoric times until the modern era.
Historic overview:
The Nubian Museum was established and opened to the public in 1997 as part of the UNESCO international campaign that began in 1960 to save the ancient monuments and temples of Nubia.
Architectural description:
It was designed by Egyptian architect Mahmoud Al-Hakim, with the help of a German design company in relation to landscapes (Werkmeister & Heimer) and Leila Al-Masry in relation to global sites. The museum exhibits were designed by Mexican designer Pedro Ramirez Varquez.
The museum occupies an area of 50,000 square meters on the banks of the Nile in Aswan, and 7,000 square meters of them have been allocated to the museum building. The design of the museum evokes the traditional design of the Nubian village and the design was finished with local sandstone and pink granite making it one of the winners of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001.
The museum includes five thousand artifacts representing the stages of the development of Nubian civilization and heritage, and the external exhibition of the museum includes 68 unique pieces of large statues and monumental paintings of various sizes.
One of the most prominent exhibits: a prehistoric skeleton, in addition to the collection of the Qustul and Ballanah tombs that were discovered during the second archaeological survey of Nubia before the second ramp of the Aswan Dam which includes many iron weapons, silver crowns that are decorated with agate, horse saddles, silver ornaments, and crockery. The museum also has an ethnographic exhibition of the traditional Nubian community before the displacement.
