Overview:

• Robben Island "is one of the most important tourist attractions in South Africa, and it is a local heritage site, and it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List."

• It is located in the natural Table Bay, 6.9 kilometres west of the coast of Bloubergstrand in Cape Town.

• "Robben Island" is almost oval, with an area of 5.07 square kilometres. It is a flat island, and it rises a few meters above sea level.

Historic overview:

• The island was used as a residence for prisoners, politicians, dangerous criminals, and convicts since 1961, and it continued to play this role until 1996.

• Nelson Mandela, the country's former President and Nobel Prize winner, spent two thirds of his prison term there before the fall of apartheid.

• Kgalema Motlanthe, who was also the president of South Africa, also spent 10 years on Robben Island as a political prisoner, as did President Jacob Zuma.
