Historic overview
• Louis XIV initiated the project of Les Invalides as a home and hospital for aged and unwell soldiers.
• Located in Les Invalides, The Musée de l'Armée was created in 1905 with the merger of the Musée d'Artillerie and the Musée Historique de l'Armée.
• The Musée de l'artillerie (Museum of Artillery) was founded in 1795. It held a collection of weapons.
• The Musée historique de l'Armée (Historical Museum of the Army) was created in 1896 following the Paris World Fair. Édouard Detaille had amassed an impressive collection of military uniforms and artifacts and bequeathed to the Musée de l'Armée in Paris following his death.
