Historic overview
• Late in the regime of Napoleon III, it was built according to plans by Jean-Charles Alphand, who created all the major parks demanded by the Emperor.
• After the French revolution, it was the site of battles of the National Guard and the naval artillery against the Prussians.
• In the nineteenth century, Napoleon III turned to Baron Haussmann, a renowned architect, to renovate the area occupying 4950 acres and plant about 600,000 trees.
