Brandenburg Gate

Overview:

• The gate is the most important landmark of Berlin, the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany, as it is a symbol and landmark unmatched by other landmarks of the city, which was closely linked to the history of Germany, the history of Europe and the twentieth century in general.

• Named after the state of Brandenburg to which it belongs, this gate appears on various German euro coins of 10 cents, 20 cents, and others.

• The "Historic Brandenburg Gate" or "Brandenburger Tor" in German is located in the heart of the city, enjoying the warmth of Pariserplatz.

Architectural description:

• The Brandenburg Gate is a classic building of sandstone, 26 meters high, 11 meters thick, and 65.5 meters wide.

• The gate consists of five lanes of traffic, the largest of which is located in the middle, in addition to two side wings, and the gate rests on six majestic columns, each 15 meters high.

• Above the gate is (the Cavadriga), which is the statue of victory that adorns the gate at its top. It is a 5-meter-high copper statue that took 4 years to complete. It was built in the year 1793 AD by the artist (Johann Gottfried Schadow).

Histoic overview:

• It was built between the years 1788 AD to the year 1791 AD in honor of the Prussian King "Fried Rich Wilhelm II", and the design was completed by "Karl Gotthard", whose design was inspired by the Propylaea, which is the gate leading to the Acropolis Temple in Athens.

• The gate defined in the past the boundary between East Berlin and West Berlin, and thus the boundary between the Warsaw Pact countries and NATO.

• After the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 AD, which was built near the Brandenburg Gate and located in the eastern part of it, the gate became a desolate, isolated place, and after the fall of the wall in 1989 AD, citizens flocked to the gate to celebrate its symbolism related to victory. It is the only gate that remains from that wall, although it is actually older than it in existence and construction, as it was originally built-in place of an old gate to the city.

• The gate was renovated in 2001 AD and opened to visitors after its renovation on the third of October 2002 AD, to tell in silence the story of a calamity suffered by humanity and a crime that was once approved by human consciences.
