About the city

Dar es Salaam

• It is an ancient city, which was previously considered the capital of the Republic of Tanzania.

• It is considered one of its largest cities and its economic center. It is also one of the coastal cities overlooking the Indian Ocean, and this is what led to the spread of many important ports there, and contributed to developing the role of trade exchange between Tanzania and other countries, especially the trade in cotton, spices, coffee, ivory and other goods with excellent specifications.

• The city of “Dar es Salaam” was subject to self-government and independence. As for the spread of the Arabic language there, it goes back to the trade movements between the Arabian Peninsula and “Dar es Salaam,” where Arab merchants taught its residents the Arabic language. Over time, Arabic merged with the dominant language there, which is known as “Bantu”, which led to the emergence of a new language known as the “Swahili language” and the Arab presence in it also contributed to the spread of the Islamic religion among its population.

• The vast majority of the population adheres to the Islamic religion, and their percentage reached ninety percent of the population in the eighth decade of the twentieth century AD. There have been many Islamic centers in the city for many years, including the Al-Haramain Islamic Center, which has an Islamic middle school.

• The city of “Dar es Salaam” contains many agricultural and industrial resources, and is characterized by the presence of a market specialized in selling fish of all kinds and exporting them to many countries of the world. It is also home to the Central Bank of the Republic of Tanzania, and it contains many public and private companies. All the economic factors present in it led to its development and growth over time.

• The majority of the population of Dar es Salaam are indigenous, with a group of Asian origins. This city is characterized by rapid population growth, reaching a rate of 5.6% annually. Its population is approximately five million people, and there are expectations indicating the possibility of the population increasing to reach approximately fifteen million in the year 2050 AD.

• There are many educational institutions and universities spread across Dar es Salaam, the most important of which is the University of Dar es Salaam, which is the largest and oldest university in Tanzania. The number of students in it reaches approximately twenty thousand students, who study all human and scientific disciplines.
