Riyadh

Is the capital of Saudi Arabia and the largest city on the Arabian Peninsula. With a population of 6.9 million people in 2018.

Riyadh is one of the largest cities in the Arab world, its area is about 1913km square.

Riyadh is located on the eastern part of the Najd plateau at about 600 metres above sea level.

 

Riyadh is the political and administrative centre of Saudi Arabia and is the headquarters of the country's central government bodies, such as the Saudi Royal Court and the Council of Ministers of Saudi Arabia. Riyadh is one of the world's fastest-growing cities in population, with many immigrants; the percentage of Saudis is 66% and 34% of non-Saudis. The Indians head the list of the Immigrants then the Pakistanis, Egyptians, Yemenis and Syrians.

The city was established on the ruins of the old city of Ḥajr Al-Yamaamh, it was inhabited by Both Tasm and Jadis tribe.

Then it was founded by the tribe of Banu Hanifa. Hajr became the center of Al-Yamamah and the headquarters of its governors. Arabs made it one of their markets in which they traded, boasted, and stayed from the tenth of Muharram to the end of the month every year.

The famous Arab traveler Ibn Battuta visited the city of Hajr.

Hajr was fragmented into small towns in the 10th century AH. The name "Hajar" began to disappear until the name "Riyadh"was applied to the region including the remaining of Hajar neighborhoods.

In 12th century AH Ibn Dawwas ruled Al-Riaydh city, In 1185 Hijri / 1771 Riyadh was part of the First Saudi State and ending long years of wars between Ibn Dawwas and saudia arabia.

 Ibrahim Pasha's armies occupied it and it was destroyed then Turki Bin Abdullah entered the city and made it the capital of saudia arabia.

The city is divided into 15 municipal districts, managed by the Municipality of Riyadh headed by the mayor of Riyadh, and the Royal Commission for Riyadh.

Riyadh also has the largest female university in the world, the Princess Nora bint Abdul Rahman University which accommodate 60,000 students.
