Taurus Mountains
Overview:
Taurus Mountains are a mountain range in southern Anatolian, in Turkey. The Euphrates River descends from Taurus Mountain to Syria.
Cilo Mountain (4168 m) is the highest peak and then in the west Bitlis, Malatya and Mountains.
Taurus Mountains extends to the west, close to the Mediterranean Sea, it has Eğirdir Lake and ends at Elmalı mountains (3086 meters high), west the bay of Antalya. Taurus Mountains separating the Anatolian and Levant.
The Taurus mountains are divided into three chains:
The Western Taurus that consists of the Katrancık Mountain, white and Bey mountains. The Central one. The East side which contains Maden, Malatya, Genç, Nurhak and Bitlis Mountains.
Taurus Mountains is the main home of cedar tree, which lately are affected by cutting it randomly and began to decay.
300 million cedar seed (270 tons) were planted at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level, in 8 months.
Historical overview:
They found an archaeological site dated back to Bronze Age and evidence of tin mining at that time, which indicate the importance of this region.
During World War I, the German and Turkish railway system proved that the Taurus Mountains will be a major strategic objective of the Allies.
