About the city

Lisbon

Lisbon is the "City of the Seven Hills" the official capital of the State of Portugal, as it is located in the west of the country at the mouth of the Tegus River, in addition to being the capital of Western Europe due to its location on the far western side of the European continent, and the city of Lisbon acts as the main port of Portugal and as a commercial, political and tourist center.

Lisbon is the largest city in Portugal relative to its population, with a population of 517,802.

Lisbon has a moderate climate, with average temperatures around 17 degrees Celsius throughout the year. The city's proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its influence on the moderate air currents coming from the Gulf led to the formation of these moderate weather conditions throughout the year.

The city of Lisbon was the capital of Portugal since ancient times, in addition to being one of the most important ports in Europe. It was also for Portugal a center of the local economy. During the establishment of the Portuguese maritime empire, the large and strategic port of Lisbon became a major project for slaves, ivory, spices, silk, sugar, salt and other commodities.

It should also be known that by the year 1550 AD, Lisbon was one of the largest cities in Europe in terms of population. As its population reached 100,000 people, then after that there was a slowdown in population and economic growth in the city of Lisbon caused by the decline of the Asian Empire of Portugal and its union with Spain, and after 1705 AD the emergence of gold and diamonds in Brazil worked to revive the economic and political importance of the city.

By the year 1750 AD, the population of Lisbon reached 250,000 people, or nearly a tenth of the population of Portugal, and with the occurrence of the earthquake in 1755 AD and the subsequent fire and destruction of a large part of the city, the growth in the city stopped again. This period coincided with the end of the Brazilian gold rush, which slowed the rebuilding and revitalization of the city again; The city of Lisbon could not recover its previous position in that period, as its population reached less than 170,000 people by the year 1800 AD.
