About the city

Sicily

Sicily is an Italian island and considered the largest European island in the Mediterranean.

It is self-governing and is officially known as the Sicilian Autonomous Region. It is usually the first region that refugees arrive across the Mediterranean from Africa.

The island of Sicily is located in the Mediterranean Sea, and has been known for its strategic location throughout its long history.

It is located on the trade route to the Mediterranean. The island has a rich and unique culture, especially in the arts, music, literature, cuisine and architecture, as it was the cradle of a number of personalities who influenced European and world history.

Islamic rule on the island of Sicily began since 902, while the rule of the entire island continued between 965-1061, although the last Islamic cities on the island did not fall until 1091 during the Norman expansion in southern Italy.
