Sohag

Sohag is the capital of Sohag governorate, located on the west bank of the Nile River.

The city is divided into East and West:

Sharq district includes 15th Street, Al Gomhoria Street, Zahraa, Al Thaqafa Square, and Opera Cinema, which is one of the most prestigious streets in Sohag and Gharb Sohag that includes Sidi Al Aref Square, Al Shahid Square, Al Farshouti and Al Hawiti.

Sharq District: - It includes the governorate building and administration building in Nasr City and includes Arab Al Atawlah, Alezba, Arab Mahrous, Mahrous Island, the Sports Stadium, in addition to the villages and Sohag Center.

Sohag Governorate witnessed important historical events that began in prehistoric times and spanned throughout the Pharaonic era and the Greco-Roman eras. Three ancient Egyptian provinces were established on its land, from the eighth to the tenth. In prehistoric times, humans settled on its land, and the settlements of Umrah and Al-Mahasna attest to this. In the pre-dynastic and early dynastic era, the city of Thana played a role in ancient Egyptian history. From Al-Barba, the center of Gerga came the rulers who united the two countries of Egypt, and the last of them was King Mina.

The governorate celebrates its national day every year, which corresponds to the tenth of April, and the tenth of April was chosen to be a national holiday for the governorate to celebrate the success of the people of the region in confronting the French invasion forces when they came with their famous campaign against Egypt and marched their armies to the south, and the campaign met strong resistance in the cities and villages of the governorate.

The January 25 revolution began in Sohag from the first day, like the rest of the governorates of the Republic, as it participated in the demonstrations from the first day, and soon the number of demonstrators increased from hundreds to thousands on the Friday of Anger, then increased to hundreds of thousands until Friday of stepping down.

The number of demonstrators that roamed the provincial capital exceeded half a million, and continued until the letter of resignation.
